This essay explores the development of the transatlantic economy over the past three decades. It focuses on the ‘weaponization of interdependence’ by successive U.S. administrations and the resulting desire for ‘open strategic autonomy’ on the part of the European Union. The question is whether these two trends are in the best interest of parties on either side of the Atlantic. The short term benefits of those policies are likely to have significant and negative longer-term implications. That said, better coordination across the Atlantic may prove harder to achieve today than it was in the past.
