Religious diversity is increasingly visible in the workplace, with no shortage of tension and conflicts stemming from prejudice among employers, co-workers and customers, strict policies of corporate neutrality, and a general fear of public expressions of religiosity. Courts are seldom called in to adjudicate disputes, but the case law of domestic and international courts in Europe and North America nevertheless offers an excellent window into the problems faced by employees who wish to reconcile their work and religious obligations. The case law of Portuguese courts is comparatively narrow, but arguably exemplary in the way it meets the needs of religious minorities against a backdrop of a labour market strongly influenced by Catholic traditions.en
