dc.description.abstract | This chapter explores the role of religion in the reconstruction of national/ethnic categories in Montenegro, paying particular attention to the period of religious revival after the breakup of Yugoslavia. It argues that religious identities became an essential yet politicised aspect of the way people saw themselves nationally. Hence, religious association became a component of political identities in the discourse of political elites, while religious leaders sought to emphasise belonging to a certain religious group as a manifestation of one’s ethno-national identity. | en |
