Contesting European integration is not a new phenomenon. Historically, the establishment and progressive institutionalisation of the European Union (EU) has had to overcome significant scepticism and outright resistance from powerful social groups and political actors across the continent. Yet, the challenge of Euroscepticism has become especially acute in the second decade of the twenty-first century with shifting levels of public support for the EU; the imminent exit of the United Kingdom from the Union (as of late 2018); a rising number of openly Eurosceptic parties in governments across Europe; and high-profile conflicts between the European Commission on the one hand, and Italy, Hungary and Poland on the other.
