dc.description.abstract | The prevailing multilateral rules regulating digital trade predate the global internet. Updating them is important, given the trend for countries to embed rules for cross-border trade in digital goods and services in discriminatory free trade agreements. Ongoing negotiations on e-commerce in the World Trade Organization (WTO) on a plurilateral basis offer an opportunity to build on recent regional agreements to agree on rules to support digital trade. Commonalities in the preferences of China and the European Union (EU) on some elements of digital trade policy create prospects for cooperation in this area, thereby helping to keep the WTO relevant in the 21st century. | en |
